1. YES. Spike is an arse. Yeah, he's a vampire with a soul and doesn't kill humans any more, but that doesn't stop him from being a total git.
2. Spike's biggest fear is being tortured in hell and unable to stop it from happening. His love of torturing people with railroad spikes is supposed to be how he got his name. Having no control in a situation, being unable to effect anything, touch anything, eat or drink, also drives him up the wall and makes him go all emo.
3. Make him your bitch, Gabe. I mean, uh... No, I mean that. If he pushes Gabe's buttons, go to town on him. I'd prefer he not be killed without plotting before though.
