Truth be told, Gabriel had no real aspirations of being Heaven's favorite son. In fact, when you got down to all the stupid psychological bits, he had no real aspirations at all. Being an archangel had a few perks- being able to torment the junior angels was a plus and some of them were just fun to mess with- but beyond that, he did what he had to do and mostly just had an intense dislike for the whole format. What he loved was his family and he'd have done anything for any of them, even if he did come off as the biggest flake in all of Heaven.
And then Michael and Lucifer got into the world's biggest bitchfight and the next thing he knew, everyone was tearing each other apart and he stood there and watched it, while everyone asked him to pick a side. Several times, in fact. Each time, he just hung back, not wanting to choose a brother to support. It wasn't fair that he had to- it wasn't fair that they were fighting. It wasn't fair that their Father wasn't stepping in to tear the two of them apart and make them deal like this like rational people.
Eventually, it got to be too much and he just... Left.
Falling was too much effort. He didn't want to Fall. He just wanted to be elsewhere for awhile.
Awhile... Just turned out to be a pretty long while.
And he knew what everyone probably thought of him. He was a coward, he was worse than a blasphemy, blady, blady, blah. He didn't actually care, except for when he did, but those moments were few and far between and, anyway, he had a much better gig now (being a Trickster was awesome) and having that gig meant that he didn't have to deal with his family killing each other and breaking his heart. He'd rather be hated by the whole lot for hiding and refusing to watch the insanity continue, then loved because he chose to go against one brother.
"You're too much of a coward to stand up to your family."
And what did some cocky, shit-for-brains mortal like Dean Winchester really know about it?
... A lot more than Gabriel was really comfortable with, honestly.
