I became a pagan. Not as hard as you'd think. Hells no.

What's a pagan?

[Sam's actually sitting on the outskirts of the temple, now that Cas is safely retrieved from the Wastelands and Dean's off doing his own thing; Sam's been busy just... focusing his mind on other things. The garden at the Cocoon, taking care of Riot (sitting beside him, gnawing at a bone, hey buddy), writing... But of course, he also has to focus on a way to keep whatever's happening to his body at bay long enough for them to get a way out of here. And he hasn't exactly lost all possible help just yet, right?

He breathes out heavy, just recovering from a wracking cough that left the taste of blood on his lips. Maybe he's going to regret this and all. And maybe this is a shitty way of even asking, but it's quicker and more sincere than the PCD. He just hangs his hands off his knees and locks them together, the laziest prayer pose ever.]

Hey, uh. Gabriel.

I know you're probably still sore about the last event, but... I really need to talk with you. Need to ask you something. I figured since you're a step higher on the totem pole than Cas... Maybe you'd be able to.

[He really just wants to see if there's even a chance.

Hell, if not just for his sake, but for Dean's, too. He doesn't want to plague his brother with this any more than it already obviously bothers him. Maybe they can catch it before it gets bad.]

Gods that aren't my God. Basically.

Not completely. I just had to be a lot less... holy and self-righteous. You've met Castiel. I was never that bad, buuuut I had my moments.

You're right. I wouldn't usually.

[Pretty much straight-forward there. He just lets his hands hang limp at his knees and frowns, that same old Sam Winchester frown that silently considered options.]

When you said we mess things up trying to make it better, you were pretty much on the dot. Or at least that's usually the deal with me. [Might as well cut to the chase, because he figures Gabriel would be more willing to help him out if he were quick to get at the root of the prayer.] The Trials are probably killing me; Cas can't fix it, so I figured I'd ask the archangel if he could heal or post-pone it until I could get out.

Figured it was worth requesting.

I don't think Castiel's that self-righteous.

[Gabriel eyes him warily. He trusts the Winchesters about as far as he could throw them without his Grace most days, but he understands desperation. The last time they went looking for his help, they'd started the apocalypse and he gave them hell for it and he got hell right back.

Now his options are limited. And he has to hear them out, see what he can do, because hell if he's not obligated to do something. The problem with doing one good deed is if you survive your own martyrdom, people keep expecting nice things out of you.]

I dunno. I could maybe put the kibosh in some of the symptoms, but this ain't something that's supposed to be fixable. You open that door- you gotta go all the way. No take-backsies.

He's mellowed out a lot.

[He nods.]

... Slowing it down's fine with me. Honestly, I'm not thinking of home right now. I just want to keep it down here — last thing they need trying to get out or even just trying to get through the months is someone hacking up blood and causing extra trouble on the side.

[Don't expect too much self-respect, okay, he's a Winchester. He just wants to not be in the way.

Dean wants to fix it, and Sam knows he'll do what he can... but Sam's not holding his breath. Maybe Sam just won't get his happy end. Maybe he's royally fucked. And Sam, for all his hope and belief that there's something good beyond the muck, is practical.

He might die. It hurts too much to pretend there's a 100% sure-fire way to fix it.]

If you can't, that's that. If you don't want to bother, fine by me.

[It's just a request. Sam's not so dim as to think an angel would automatically help him. Most just fuck him over, with the exception of Balthazar. Funnily enough. But even then, he was soulless, so... no, he's not even gonna count it.]

Eh, a little of column a, a little of column b. Don't tell him this, but I think hanging out with the Winchesters did him some good. It's a toxic relationship he oughta ditch, buuuut it didn't hurt him that bad.

Wait, what's toxic about it? Dean's an ass and everything, but they're not that bad.

Oh, don't give me the "I don't wanna be a burden crap." You'll make me gag. [Gabriel rolls his eyes, but it's all for show- sarcasm and all. Tigers don't change their stripes and Winchesters eat martyrdom for breakfast. He didn't corner the market on that. Those boys practically had a trailer park full of crosses they could climb up on.]

I'll try. [He couldn't fix Castiel, but there wasn't a lot there to fix without making him different again. This is something else.

He rolls up the sleeves of his jacket- also for show.] Are you still attached to those sigils on your ribs?

They're out of their depth, now that they've gotta play by someone else's rules, but back home? Those mooks have got a self-righteous streak that would make the entire Catholic Church cross themselves in shock. If you don't fit into their worldview or do things their way? You can make like roadkill and hit the pavement.

Yeah, Dean said if he meets me on Earth he's going to kill me.

[You and your dumb sarcasm. There are too many people in his life that thrive off it.]

I can always get the sigils replaced later.

[He eyes Gabriel's sleeves, thoroughly frowning, brow quirked.]

... You're not soul-fisting my gut, are you? Because I was hoping that'd be a one-time deal.

Okay, first of all? I don't like you like that. [He flicks his wrist and wiggles his fingers. There is absolutely no reason for any of this, but he's glad it's tweaking Sam out.] Second of all, you might wanna hold off on the replacements. On the plus side, the only angels here don't actually wanna kill you and if there were angels who wanted to kill you, it ain't that big a town.

So you're golden. [He cracks his knuckles over his head and steps forward into Sam's space.] The nice thing to do is to tell you it's gonna hurt and you should brace yourself, but, uh-

[He doesn't finish that sentence before he shoots out a hand to land it palm down on Sam's chest. There's a horrible sensation of something scraping Sam's ribs as the old sigils are wiped clean, replaced by a new set. This one a lot stronger. It's not a cure- that much is obvious, but it does help.]

Hoo boy. I haven't done that in ages. [Gabriel shakes out his hand as he steps back.] We used to give that to prophets to slow down the visions and keep them from burning out too fast. It ain't much, but it's the best idea I got.

See? What a charmer.

But would he do that to Castiel? He likes Castiel. I know he's against all non-humans and everything, but it seems like Castiel's an exception.

There's always an exception until they put their foot outta line. [But from what he hears, Castiel has managed to keep the Winchesters from icing him through things they wouldn't forgive anyone else for.]
